Right Side Pain: What Does It Mean?

Right-sided pain is your body’s alarm system, and its location can reveal different health concerns. A sharp pull in the right lower back may indicate a strained muscle or a herniated disc pressing on a nerve, especially if the pain radiates down the leg. A deep ache under the right ribs after eating can signal gallstones, while burning or cramping in the lower right abdomen might point to irritable bowel syndrome—or the early stages of appendicitis, which can become life-threatening within hours if ignored.
Pain higher on the right side may involve the liver, potentially inflamed by hepatitis or fatty liver disease, sometimes accompanied by fatigue and yellowing of the skin. Flank pain paired with fever or burning urination could indicate a kidney infection or stones. Even the heart and lungs can cause “referred” pain in the right chest.
Sudden, severe, or persistent pain, especially when accompanied by fever, vomiting, or shortness of breath, should never be ignored. Prompt medical evaluation can mean the difference between simple treatment and irreversible damage.
