For Olesia, a young woman from Russia, and her husband Eugen, this happiness began when they learned they were expecting a baby girl. Each ultrasound brought reassurance, showing growth, a healthy heartbeat, and all signs of a normal pregnancy. Their hearts were full of anticipation and love as they imagined welcoming their daughter into the world.

But during a routine scan, everything changed. The doctor’s expression grew grave, and devastating news followed: their baby had severe malformations. Her tiny hands would not develop properly, and all of her internal organs appeared enlarged. The diagnosis hit like a storm, shattering the joy they had carefully nurtured.

Doctors urged them to consider ending the pregnancy, warning of a lifetime of hardship. “Do you understand that this is a cross you will have to carry all your life? An invalid child! You will be pointed at everywhere you go. You will only work for medicine and pray that she will die sooner,” Olesia recalled. The words struck her like a cruel blow, leaving despair where hope had once lived, and casting a heavy shadow over what should have been a time of joy.
