Psychologists explain why Donald Trump keeps using the same eight-word sign-off

Donald Trump’s New Signature Sign-Off May Reveal a Strategic Shift in His Messaging
Donald Trump’s recent social media posts have all ended the same way: “thank you for your attention to this matter.” For a figure known for blunt, off-the-cuff communication, experts say the formal phrasing could be more than polite etiquette—it may be a deliberate tactic.
Trump has long dominated social media, often using emotionally charged language such as “hoax” or “corrupt” to mobilize supporters and spark engagement. But this latest sign-off departs sharply from that style, adopting a tone described by experts as unusually formal for the former president.
“‘Thank you for your attention to this matter’ is not negative or moral—it’s just oddly formal,” said Claire Robertson, a psychologist specializing in political polarization at Colby College in Maine. “It’s a clear shift from his usual messaging style.”
Holistic psychotherapist Shennika Moore-Clarke suggested that the phrase may carry subtle undertones of control and authority. “It’s less about gratitude and more about command,” she told HuffPost. “It frames the preceding content as something important, implying that readers should pay attention and comply.”
Robertson noted that the wording assumes audience engagement, reinforcing Trump’s desire to assert control. “Even small cues, like handshakes, reflect his awareness of power dynamics,” she said. “This phrase functions similarly, signaling authority and seriousness.”
Experts also point out that repeated phrases can become shorthand within specific communities, creating micro-cultures where meaning is understood without explanation. In Trump’s case, the new sign-off could be establishing a pattern that signals importance and authority to his followers.
Whether the shift is intentional remains uncertain. But analysts agree: the phrase effectively captures attention, projects authority, and subtly reinforces control—precisely the outcomes it appears designed to achieve.
