Courtroom Emotions Run High as Evidence Reveals Final Moments in Athena Strand Case

A Texas courtroom fell silent as emotional testimony and graphic evidence were presented in the sentencing proceedings connected to the death of 7-year-old Athena Strand, a case that has deeply affected both jurors and the victim’s family.

Tanner Horner, 34, has already pleaded guilty to charges of capital murder and aggravated kidnapping. His plea was entered on April 7, shortly before the trial was set to begin. The current proceedings are focused solely on sentencing, where he faces either life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty.

During the hearing, prosecutors introduced video evidence recorded inside a delivery vehicle, described in court as highly distressing. Before the footage was played, Judge George Gallagher warned those present that they could leave if they felt unable to continue watching. Several family members exited the courtroom, while jurors were visibly shaken as the evidence was shown.

According to investigators, the incident occurred in November 2022 at the child’s family home in Texas. Horner had arrived to deliver a package that reportedly contained holiday gifts. Prosecutors stated that the child was taken from the property and placed into the delivery vehicle.

Audio presented in court captured the child asking questions and attempting to understand what was happening, including repeated expressions of fear and confusion. At points, she asked whether she was being kidnapped. Prosecutors alleged that Horner responded by attempting to distract her with casual conversation rather than addressing her concerns.

As the recording continued, the child’s distress reportedly increased, with her calling out for her mother before the audio ended. The evidence prompted an emotional reaction in the courtroom, with jurors and family members visibly affected.

The sentencing phase is ongoing, with a jury now tasked with determining whether Horner will receive life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty.
