Mechanic Warns Drivers About Common Starting Mistake That Can Damage Engines

Automotive specialists are warning drivers about a common habit that may gradually damage a vehicle’s engine and lead to costly repairs over time.
According to a mechanic known on social media as @tallerredista, one frequent mistake is starting the car and immediately driving off without allowing the engine a brief moment to stabilize. The advice suggests waiting approximately 30 to 40 seconds after ignition before putting the vehicle in motion.
The reason, experts explain, is that engine oil needs a short time to circulate fully through the system after the car has been inactive. This lubrication process helps protect moving parts from friction and wear during operation. Without this brief delay, the engine may not be fully protected at the moment it begins working under load.
Mechanics warn that repeatedly driving off immediately after starting the car can increase long-term wear on components such as bearings and other internal parts. Over time, this can contribute to overheating, reduced performance, and in severe cases, expensive mechanical repairs.
While modern engines are designed to handle a wide range of conditions, professionals emphasize that simple habits—such as allowing a short warm-up period—can contribute to better engine longevity and lower maintenance costs.
