Colorado Football Community Mourns Death of Quarterback Dominiq Ponder After Fatal Crash in Boulder County
The college sports world is mourning the loss of University of Colorado quarterback Dominiq Ponder, who died at the age of 23 following a single-vehicle crash in Boulder County, authorities and university officials confirmed.
According to local reports, the crash occurred early Sunday morning when a 2023 Tesla reportedly lost control on a curve shortly before 3 a.m. The vehicle crossed into opposing lanes, struck a guardrail and utility pole, and rolled over. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but the driver was pronounced dead.
Later that day, the University of Colorado confirmed that Ponder was the driver. The program expressed condolences to his family and asked the campus community to keep them in their thoughts.
Ponder was preparing for his third season with the Colorado Buffaloes, having transferred to the program after previous stints at Bethune-Cookman and Georgia Tech. Originally from Florida, he was known for his size, athleticism, and dual-threat ability at quarterback, standing 6-foot-5 and developing a reputation as a promising collegiate player.
He had previously played high school football in Florida and South Carolina before continuing his college career across multiple programs, ultimately joining Colorado while pursuing a degree in criminology.
Following his death, the university’s athletics department made counseling and support resources available to teammates, coaches, and staff as they process the loss.
