Chicago Firefighter’s Memorial Service Postponed After Wife Gives Birth to Their Second Child

A Chicago family mourning the loss of a beloved firefighter is also celebrating the arrival of a new life, as the memorial service for Firefighter/EMT Michael Altman was postponed when his wife unexpectedly went into labor with their second child.
Altman, 32, died after suffering critical injuries while responding to a fire in the line of duty. According to officials, he was battling a blaze when a floor collapsed beneath him, causing severe injuries. He was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he later succumbed to those injuries.
During a March 17 press briefing, Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt confirmed Altman’s death, describing the incident as a heartbreaking loss for the department and the city. Colleagues remembered him as a dedicated first responder known for his courage, professionalism, and commitment to serving the community.
Altman also carried on a proud family tradition of public service. He was a fourth-generation firefighter, continuing a legacy of dedication that spanned generations.
Family, friends, fellow firefighters, and community members had planned to gather on March 27 to honor his life and sacrifice. However, those plans changed when his wife, Nora, went into labor shortly before the scheduled service.
In light of the family’s circumstances and the arrival of the couple’s second child, fire department officials postponed the memorial service and announced that a new date would be scheduled.
The unexpected birth brought a poignant moment of hope amid profound grief, as the Altman family welcomed a new addition while preparing to say goodbye to a husband, father, and firefighter whose service and sacrifice left a lasting impact on his community.
