Mother of Two Shares Overlooked Symptoms Before Stage 4 Bowel Cancer Diagnosis

A 47-year-old Australian woman, Susan Schmidt, is speaking out about the subtle early symptoms she believes were missed before she was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer in 2023.

Schmidt, a mother of two and physiotherapist, says her earliest warning sign was persistent fatigue, which she initially attributed to menopause and a busy lifestyle. Over time, she also experienced constipation and intermittent abdominal discomfort, which she dismissed as temporary digestive issues linked to diet and travel. Despite undergoing initial tests, she says no immediate red flags were identified at the time.

Her condition escalated dramatically when she experienced severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and bowel changes that she initially thought were due to food poisoning. Following further medical evaluation, including a colonoscopy and imaging scans, doctors discovered a tumor. Subsequent testing confirmed stage 4 bowel cancer that had spread to multiple organs, including the uterus, lymph nodes, and lung.

Since her diagnosis, Schmidt has continued chemotherapy and has launched a foundation aimed at supporting cancer patients and families. She now uses her platform to encourage others not to ignore persistent changes in bowel habits or unexplained fatigue, emphasizing the importance of seeking further medical evaluation even when early tests appear normal.
