Cadet Avery Koonce Remembered After Sudden Death at U.S. Air Force Academy

The U.S. Air Force Academy community continues to mourn the loss of 19-year-old cadet Avery Koonce, whose sudden passing in September 2024 deeply affected her family, friends, classmates, and instructors.
Koonce was found unresponsive in her dorm room, an unexpected tragedy that prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes across the military academy. Fellow cadets, coaches, and faculty members remembered her as a dedicated and driven student whose work ethic and kindness left a lasting impression on those around her.
Academy leadership also extended condolences to her family and emphasized ongoing support for cadets and staff affected by the loss. Many who knew her described her influence not through major public gestures, but through consistent determination, humility, and compassion in daily life.
According to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office, Koonce’s death was attributed to sepsis caused by Paeniclostridium sordellii, a rare bacterial infection that developed alongside a respiratory illness. Medical experts note that such infections are uncommon but can progress rapidly, becoming life-threatening when the body’s immune response is overwhelmed.
Her death has since been cited as a reminder of how quickly severe infections can escalate, even in young and otherwise healthy individuals, underscoring the unpredictable nature of certain medical conditions.
As the academy community continues to grieve, many remember Koonce not only for her accomplishments as a cadet but for the lasting personal impact she had on those who knew her.
