Hillary Clinton Calls Biden’s 2024 Reelection Bid a “Terrible Mistake,” Says Earlier Exit Could Have Changed Race

Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has criticized former President Joe Biden over his decision to seek reelection in 2024, describing it as a “terrible mistake” during a recent public appearance in New York.

Clinton said Biden’s choice to remain in the race had significant consequences for both his political legacy and the Democratic Party, arguing that an earlier withdrawal could have reshaped the party’s nomination process.

According to Clinton, Biden had previously indicated he viewed his presidency as a transitional period to support a new generation of leadership. She suggested that stepping aside earlier would have allowed for a more open primary contest and potentially strengthened the party’s position heading into the general election.

“He made a terrible mistake for himself, his legacy, and for the country,” Clinton said, according to media reports.

Biden ultimately remained in the 2024 race until July of that year, when he withdrew following mounting concerns after a widely scrutinized debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Vice President Kamala Harris later became the Democratic nominee but went on to lose the November election.

Clinton also argued that an earlier decision not to run again would have given Democrats more time to hold a competitive primary and unify behind a single candidate before the general election.

Her comments add to ongoing post-election debate within the Democratic Party about strategy, timing, and leadership decisions during the 2024 campaign cycle.
