Experts Say Deep Grooves in Nails Could Signal Underlying Health Issues

Your nails may seem like a small detail, but experts say changes in their appearance can sometimes provide important clues about overall health.
Because nail growth depends on a steady supply of nutrients, oxygen, and healthy blood circulation, noticeable changes may reflect conditions affecting the body. While many nail abnormalities are harmless and can result from aging, injury, or everyday wear, persistent or unexplained changes may deserve closer attention.
One of the most notable warning signs is the appearance of Beau’s lines — deep horizontal grooves that run across the nail. These ridges can develop after the body experiences significant stress, including severe illness, infection, high fever, chemotherapy, or COVID-19.
According to Dr. Bhavini Shah of Lloyds Pharmacy Online Doctor, Beau’s lines occur when nail growth is temporarily interrupted. In more severe cases, the nail may stop growing altogether and eventually shed, a condition known as onychomadesis.
Health experts note that while nail changes are not always a sign of disease, they can sometimes serve as visible indicators of underlying health concerns and should not be ignored if they continue to worsen.
