Cabbage is widely regarded as a nutritious vegetable, but it may not be the best choice for everyone. While it offers vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants, certain health conditions can make eating cabbage—especially in large amounts or raw—less suitable.

People with thyroid disorders may need to limit frequent consumption of raw cabbage, as it contains compounds called goitrogens that can interfere with thyroid function, particularly in those with iodine deficiency. Cooking cabbage significantly reduces this effect.

Individuals with sensitive digestive systems, including those with conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), may also experience bloating, gas, abdominal cramps, or diarrhea due to cabbage’s high fiber content and fermentable carbohydrates.

Although uncommon, some people may have an allergy or sensitivity to cabbage or fermented cabbage products like sauerkraut and kimchi, which can trigger symptoms such as itching, swelling, or skin irritation. Those with kidney disease or a history of certain kidney stones may also be advised by their healthcare provider to moderate foods containing oxalates, depending on their individual condition.
