What Does the Air Recirculation Button in Your Car Actually Do? (And When to Use It!)

The air recirculation button—shown as a car with a circular arrow—stops outside air from entering and reuses the air inside your vehicle. While often overlooked, it plays an important role in comfort and efficiency.
Using recirculation helps your car cool or heat faster, especially on hot days, and keeps out exhaust, smoke, and odors in traffic or tunnels. However, leaving it on too long in cool or rainy weather can cause moisture buildup and foggy windows, which is why it’s usually disabled during defrost.
For best results, use recirculation in extreme heat, heavy traffic, or dusty conditions, and turn it off during long drives or when windows start to fog. Used correctly, this simple button can make driving more comfortable and safer.
