Remember her? She was so pretty. See how she looks now…

Phoebe Cates, best known for her role as Kate Beringer in the iconic Gremlins films, became a teen sensation in the 1980s. Born in New York City on July 16, 1963, she appeared in 16 films over 12 years, including Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Drop Dead Fred. Cates grew up surrounded by the arts—her uncle, Broadway producer Joseph Katz, and family friends like Andy Warhol influenced her early path. She began modeling at age 10 and studied at prestigious schools including Juilliard, initially dreaming of a dance career until a knee injury at 15 shifted her focus to acting.
Cates quickly became a Hollywood fixture, starring in teen comedies such as Private School and Shag, while also exploring theater in off-Broadway productions and her Broadway debut in The Tenth Man. Despite her success on screen, she preferred the stage, finding richer and more varied roles for women there. In 1989, she married Oscar-winning actor Kevin Kline, and together they raised two children, Owen Joseph and Greta Simone. Choosing family over fame, Cates stepped away from Hollywood while occasionally returning for cameos and voice roles, including the 2015 video game Lego Dimensions.
In 2005, Cates launched the Madison Avenue boutique Blue Tree, offering books, clothing, jewelry, and more. Now 58, she continues to thrive creatively and personally, balancing business, family, and occasional acting. Phoebe Cates’ story is a rare Hollywood journey: a teen star who gracefully navigated fame, embraced family life, and built a fulfilling career outside the spotlight.
