Court Reveals Final Image of 7-Year-Old Athena Strand Before Tragic Case

A recent court proceeding has brought renewed attention to the killing of 7-year-old Athena Strand, as prosecutors presented key evidence showing her final known moments. Jurors were shown a black-and-white image captured inside a delivery vehicle, depicting Athena seated behind the driver and facing forward. According to prosecutors, the image contradicts earlier statements made by the suspect, Tanner Horner, who pleaded guilty on April 7 to capital murder and aggravated kidnapping. The case has now moved into the sentencing phase, where he could face life imprisonment.
Authorities say the image was recorded on November 30, 2022—the day Athena was reported missing from her father’s home in Texas. Investigators allege Horner had been delivering a package in the area before the incident and later admitted to placing the child inside his vehicle. During the hearing, Wise County District Attorney James Stainton emphasized that Athena was alive at that time, making the sequence of events that followed critical to the case. Additional footage shown in court reportedly captured the driver appearing calm while Athena showed signs of distress.
Presiding Judge George Gallagher instructed jurors to carefully consider all evidence before deciding on sentencing. Prosecutors are expected to introduce further material, including recordings from inside the vehicle, which officials warn may be difficult to hear. Investigators previously said Horner led authorities to Athena’s body near the Trinity River after they tracked him through a confirmed package delivery. The case has drawn widespread attention, underscoring concerns about community safety and the importance of thorough investigative work.
