Elephant finally rescued after over 80 years in shackles – finally lays down and rest

Grandma Somboon, an elephant taken from the wild as a calf, spent over 80 years in captivity—forced to perform, carry tourists, and beg on the streets. In January, she was rescued by Thailand’s Save Elephant Foundation and brought to Elephant Nature Park. At 87, frail and exhausted, she immediately lay down on a soft sand bed—her first peaceful sleep in decades. Now receiving care, food, and love, Somboon’s recovery is a powerful symbol of resilience and a reminder to support ethical, cruelty-free treatment of wildlife.
