Uncle left with third-degree burns after running into burning building to save 8-year-old girl

20-year-old Derrick Byrd is being hailed a hero after suffering severe burns while rescuing his 8-year-old niece from a house fire in Aberdeen, Washington. Byrd caught his nephews as they jumped from a window, then ran back inside when his niece was too afraid to follow. Wrapping her face with his shirt, he carried her out through the flames. Despite his injuries, Byrd said he’d do it again, insisting he’s “not a hero—just an uncle who wouldn’t let his family die.”
