A former senior State Department budget analyst, Levita Almuete Ferrer, has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $657,000 by writing and altering checks to herself over a two-year period. Prosecutors say she used QuickBooks to hide the theft by changing payee records, and she now faces up to 10 years in prison while agreeing to repay the stolen funds.
