This Hairless Animal Was Rescued From the Cold — You Won’t Believe What It Is

Fur helps animals stay warm and protected—but sometimes nature delivers a surprise. Wildlife rescuers in Nova Scotia recently encountered an animal that looked like a hairless cat but turned out to be a rare, nearly bald raccoon.

Found shivering in a backyard, the young female raccoon had lost almost all her fur due to severe alopecia, likely caused by an autoimmune condition. Named Rufus, she amazed rescuers by surviving winter without frostbite. Now safe at Hope for Wildlife, she’s regaining strength in a specially designed warm enclosure, showing just how resilient wildlife can be.
