10-year-old crushed to death after foster mom sat on him

A tragic case in Berrien County, Michigan, claimed the life of ten-year-old Dakota Levi Stevens, who had been in his foster home for just a month. His foster mother, Jennifer Lee Wilson, 48, has been charged with reckless homicide.

Reports state that after Dakota misbehaved, Wilson, weighing 340 pounds, pressed her full weight onto the 90-pound boy for about five minutes while on the phone with his caseworker. Despite his screams, she continued, later asking if he was “faking.” Emergency responders arrived too late; Dakota was airlifted to a hospital but died two days later on April 25, 2024. An autopsy confirmed mechanical asphyxia caused by catastrophic internal injuries.

Shortly before the incident, Dakota had run to a neighbor’s house pleading for help, citing abuse. Wilson later claimed she only meant to “hold him down.” She pleaded guilty in October 2024 and was sentenced in January 2025 to six years in prison, with one year suspended. Other foster children in her care were removed.

Dakota was remembered as a boy who “loved the outdoors” and “marched to the beat of his own drum.” His story underscores the need for a foster system that truly protects vulnerable children.

Rest in peace, Dakota—you deserved so much more.
