Doctor-approved finger test warns of serious health conditions

You can perform a simple at-home test called the Schamroth window test to spot early warning signs of serious health issues, including lung disease, heart problems, and other conditions. This test checks for finger clubbing, a change in the shape of your fingertips and nails that develops over time.
How to do it:
- Hold your hands in front of you and touch your index fingers together, nails facing each other.
- Look at the space between your nails.
- Diamond-shaped gap visible: normal
- No gap: possible finger clubbing → see a doctor
What finger clubbing can indicate:
- Lung conditions: lung cancer, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary fibrosis, mesothelioma
- Heart problems: certain congenital defects, infective endocarditis
- Other health issues: liver disease, Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease
Symptoms of finger clubbing include rounder fingertips, downward-curving nails, spongy nail beds, and shiny skin around nails.
Important: This test doesn’t provide a diagnosis—it’s a quick way to notice changes that may require medical attention. Early detection can be key to treatment, so if your nails or fingers look different, consult your doctor.
