Why bowel cancer is on the rise in young people as James Van Der Beek dies aged 48

The death of James Van Der Beek at 48 has renewed focus on the rising threat of bowel cancer among younger adults. Diagnosed in 2023 after noticing changes in his bowel habits, Van Der Beek had stage three colorectal cancer, which had spread to nearby lymph nodes. Despite a healthy lifestyle, he passed away, leaving behind his wife Kimberly Van Der Beek and six children, with a GoFundMe raising over $2.6 million in support.

Research now points to gut bacteria—specifically colibactin-producing E. coli—as a possible factor, with studies showing DNA mutations linked to the toxin are more common in patients under 40. Lifestyle and environmental factors, including obesity, diets high in processed foods, low fiber, sedentary habits, and toxins, may also contribute.

Dr. Jamie Murphy emphasizes early detection: “Nine out of ten cancers can be successfully treated if caught in the early stages.” Van Der Beek had been open about his symptoms, hoping to raise awareness. His passing highlights the importance of vigilance, lifestyle awareness, and early screening to combat this fast-growing cancer among younger adults.
