Iran’s New Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei Issues First Public Statement, Vows Retaliation

Mojtaba Khamenei, who recently succeeded his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as Iran’s supreme leader, has delivered his first public statement, warning of retaliation against Iran’s enemies. The message was broadcast on Iranian state television on Thursday, with a news anchor reading the statement while a still image of Khamenei appeared on screen.
In the statement, Khamenei promised vengeance not only for his father’s death in an Israeli strike but also for all Iranian citizens harmed by the enemy. He praised Iranian forces for resisting attacks and said Iran would target enemy assets if demands for compensation are not met.
Khamenei also referenced strategic measures, including the potential continued use of the Strait of Hormuz and the opening of other fronts against adversaries, should the conflict persist. He described viewing his father’s body after the strike and confirmed that several family members were also killed.
Reports about Khamenei’s health following the strike have been conflicting. Some sources claimed he was severely injured and in a coma, while others said he sustained only minor injuries while sheltering in a protected location.
The statement underscores the ongoing tensions in the region and signals that Iran’s new leadership is prepared to assert itself in response to attacks, while maintaining a narrative of national steadfastness and revenge.
