New Covid variant “Cicada” prompts vaccine concerns and symptom warnings

The BA.3.2 variant of COVID-19″], nicknamed “Cicada,” is emerging as a reminder that the virus continues to change. First detected in South Africa in late 2024, it has since been found across the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, and Kenya. With up to 75% genetic variation from previous strains, Cicada may partially evade immunity, raising concerns about potential spread.

Despite these differences, frontline doctors report reassuring signs: BA.3.2 does not appear to cause more severe illness than earlier variants. Symptoms remain familiar, including cough, fever, fatigue, sore throat, congestion, shortness of breath, and loss of taste or smell. Home testing remains effective, and vaccines—while not completely preventing infection—continue to reduce the risk of hospitalization and death.

Health experts emphasize vigilance over panic. Standard precautions, such as hand hygiene, masking in crowded or high-risk settings, staying home when ill, and keeping vaccinations up to date, remain critical. Cicada highlights that while the virus evolves, public health measures and preparedness continue to provide protection.
