Why a Simple Skin Blemish Might Deserve a Closer Look

Understanding Erysipelas: A Common but Serious Skin Infection

Erysipelas is a fast-developing bacterial infection that affects the upper layers of the skin and the lymphatic system. While it is usually treatable, early recognition is key to preventing complications.

What It Is

Erysipelas is most often caused by Group A Streptococcus—the same bacteria responsible for strep throat. It typically appears as a bright red, swollen area of skin with clearly defined, raised edges.

The infection commonly affects the lower legs and the face, especially around the cheeks and nose.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms tend to appear suddenly and may worsen quickly. Typical signs include:

  • Redness, warmth, and swelling
  • Sharp, well-defined borders on the skin
  • Pain or tenderness
  • Fever and chills
  • Fatigue or general illness

When it occurs on the face, swelling can spread more rapidly, making prompt treatment especially important.

Why Early Treatment Matters

With timely care—usually antibiotics—erysipelas can be effectively treated. Delays, however, may lead to complications, so medical attention at the first signs is strongly recommended.
