Eric Clapton, now 79, endured one of the most devastating losses of his life when his four-year-old son, Conor, died in a tragic accident in New York on March 20, 1991. The child fell from a 53rd-floor apartment window that had been left unlatched, in what authorities described as a sudden and preventable accident. At the time, Conor was visiting the city with his mother, Italian actress Lory Del Santo, while Clapton was in New York and preparing to spend time with his son.
The tragedy came just one day after what would become their final outing together. Clapton had taken Conor to the circus on Long Island, a moment later described as joyful and full of promise. He had planned more activities for the following day, including a visit to the Bronx Zoo. Those plans were never realized, as the accident occurred the next morning, leaving the family in shock and abruptly ending what had been a hopeful reunion.
In the aftermath, Clapton withdrew from public life, overwhelmed by grief. Conor was laid to rest in Clapton’s hometown of Ripley in Surrey, England, and the musician spent long periods in isolation as he struggled to process the loss. During this time, he turned to music as a form of healing, eventually co-writing “Tears in Heaven,” a deeply personal song shaped by his grief.
