It Started With a Small Theft — Then the Brooch Changed Everything

I went into the interview still carrying the weight of what I believed was my biggest mistake, certain that the brooch pinned to my coat was the only meaningful thing I had left from the bookstore. I expected it to be judged as out of place or unprofessional. Instead, the hiring manager noticed it immediately, hesitated, and then quietly asked me to follow her into another room.

Inside the owner’s office at Harper & Row Books, the atmosphere changed the moment his eyes landed on the brooch. His reaction was immediate and unguarded—shock, recognition, and something like disbelief. As he listened, the story behind the brooch unfolded, and with it came the name of a wife and daughter he had long believed were lost to him.

What I thought had been a career-ending mistake became something entirely different: a connection between a grieving father and the past he thought was gone forever. By the time I left, I no longer felt like someone who had failed an interview. I understood that sometimes the smallest, most accidental choices can alter the course of more than one life at once.
