What led to the tragedy during the Maldives diving excursion that resulted in multiple fatalities

Authorities in the Maldives are investigating a fatal underwater incident that left five Italian divers missing and claimed the life of a Maldivian military diver during a recovery operation, according to officials familiar with the case.

The group had been aboard the liveaboard vessel Duke of York, which departed Malé on May 10 for a scheduled week of diving and research activity. During a morning dive, the five divers reportedly entered a site near a complex underwater cave system at depths approaching 50 meters, an area that investigators say may have exceeded standard recreational limits and raised serious safety concerns.

Maldivian authorities note that recreational diving in the country is generally restricted to a maximum depth of 30 meters, with deeper dives requiring technical certification, specialized equipment, and formal authorization. The ongoing investigation is focusing on dive planning, safety protocols, and whether proper procedures were followed before the descent. Search and recovery efforts remain underway as officials continue to assess the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
