NBC Reporter’s Seven-Word Response Sparks Tense Exchange With Trump

A contentious interview between former President Donald Trump and NBC News moderator Kristen Welker ended abruptly after a brief exchange over Trump’s continued claims about the 2020 presidential election.
The discussion became increasingly tense when Trump repeated assertions that the election had been “rigged,” a claim that has been repeatedly rejected by courts, election officials, and independent reviews. Welker responded by saying, “There’s no evidence of what you’re saying,” a remark that immediately shifted the tone of the interview.
Trump pushed back against the statement, criticizing NBC and accusing the network of bias. Moments later, he ended the interview, describing NBC as a “one-sided crooked network” before departing the set.
The exchange also touched on Trump’s proposed $1.776 billion “anti-weaponization” fund, which he has said would compensate individuals he believes were unfairly targeted by government actions, including some defendants connected to the January 6 Capitol riot. When Welker pressed for evidence supporting the need for such a program, Trump instead broadened his criticism to include President Joe Biden and major media organizations.
The confrontation highlighted the ongoing tensions between Trump and mainstream news outlets, a dynamic that has defined much of his political career. It also underscored the challenges facing interviewers who attempt to fact-check disputed claims in real time, often turning policy discussions into broader debates over trust, evidence, and the role of the press in American politics.
