U.S. Embassy Urges World Cup Travelers to Review Mexico Safety Advisories

As millions of soccer fans prepare to travel for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico is encouraging American visitors to review travel advisories and stay informed about local safety conditions before attending matches. Officials note that security risks can vary significantly between regions, making it important for travelers to check guidance specific to their destination.
The tournament, running from June 11 through July 19, is being co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Mexico is hosting 13 matches across three cities—Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey—and is expected to welcome large numbers of international visitors throughout the competition.
In its guidance, the embassy advised travelers to familiarize themselves with State Department travel advisories, follow local authorities’ instructions, and remain aware of their surroundings. Current advisory levels vary by state, with different recommendations in place depending on local security conditions.
Mexican authorities have also announced extensive security preparations for the tournament, with enhanced measures planned around stadiums, transportation hubs, tourist areas, and public gathering spaces. Officials say the goal is to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors as host cities prepare for some of the largest crowds seen in years.
