Scientists Study DNA of 117-Year-Old Woman to Explore Secrets of Extreme Longevity

Researchers in Spain have been studying the DNA of Maria Branyas Morera in an effort to better understand what may contribute to an exceptionally long life.

Branyas, who was born in the United States in 1907 and later moved to Spain, lived to the age of 117 before passing away in 2024. Before her death, she reportedly requested that scientists examine her genetic makeup to help identify biological factors linked to longevity.

Her request led researchers from institutions including the University of Barcelona and the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute to analyze her cells and genetic profile. According to the scientists involved, her biological markers suggested a body that appeared significantly younger than her chronological age.

Studies of her health data showed unusually favorable cholesterol levels and other indicators associated with cardiovascular health. Researchers also noted that she lived a lifestyle considered supportive of healthy aging, including regular physical activity, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and maintaining strong social connections.

Among her most frequently mentioned habits was a simple diet that included yogurt, particularly probiotic varieties, along with a consistent morning routine.

Scientists also examined aspects of her telomeres—structures linked to aging and cell division—though they emphasized that aging is a complex process influenced by many factors, including both genetics and environment.

Researchers involved in the study said her case suggests that extreme age does not necessarily have to be accompanied by severe illness, highlighting the interaction between inherited traits and lifestyle choices.

Branyas herself often attributed her longevity to calm living, emotional balance, close relationships, and avoiding stress and negativity. Her case continues to be studied as scientists search for broader insights into human aging and longevity.
