Michigan Parents Charged with Murder After 7-Year-Old Son Dies Following Alleged Years of Neglect

A Michigan couple has been charged with second-degree murder, child abuse, and torture following the death of their 7-year-old son, whose case has shocked investigators and the local community.
According to prosecutors, Casper O’Brien died after his heart failed under the strain of extreme obesity. Authorities allege the child, who was approximately 4 feet 2 inches tall and weighed 255 pounds, endured years of severe neglect despite his family having health insurance and his father maintaining steady employment.
Investigators say Casper had visited a doctor only once during his lifetime and lived with his younger sister in a hoarded home. The children were reportedly never enrolled in school or registered with government agencies, leaving them largely unknown to systems designed to monitor child welfare.
Prosecutors also highlighted that on the morning Casper died, his parents allegedly contacted a veterinarian to seek care for the family’s dog, a detail they argue reflects a disturbing disregard for their son’s medical needs.
Damien and Jessica O’Brien are being held without bond as they face multiple felony charges. The case has prompted renewed questions about child welfare oversight and how a vulnerable child could remain unnoticed despite signs of prolonged neglect.
