Father Refuses Ex-Wife’s Demand to Reassign Late Son’s College Fund Amid Family Rift

A grieving father has shared how a dispute over his late son’s college fund escalated into a painful confrontation that forced him to defend his son’s memory and legacy.

The father said he had been sorting through his son Peter’s belongings—books, medals, and unfinished sketches—when he was approached by his ex-wife Susan. According to his account, Susan and her husband later suggested that the money saved for Peter’s education should instead be given to her stepson, Ryan, arguing that the funds were “just sitting there.”

The father rejected the request, saying the money had been exclusively intended for Peter, who died in a drunk-driving accident shortly after earning admission to Yale University. He described the suggestion as deeply distressing, particularly given his close relationship with his son and the years he spent raising him largely on his own after Susan left when Peter was 12.

He recalled that Peter had once spoken about his future with excitement, including plans for college and travel, and that the education fund represented years of effort and shared dreams between father and son. Following the conversation, the dispute continued to weigh heavily on him as he prepared to meet Susan and her husband to address the issue further.

The situation highlights the emotional and ethical tensions that can arise over inheritance and memorial funds, especially when grief, family breakdown, and competing claims collide.
