Ashton Kutcher has quietly saved over 6,000 children from sex trafficking – he’s a real life hero

Whatever opinions people have about Ashton Kutcher’s acting, his work off-screen has gained attention for a very different reason: his long-running effort to combat child sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

In 2012, Kutcher and then-wife Demi Moore co-founded Thorn: Digital Defenders of Children, a nonprofit focused on using technology to help identify victims and support law enforcement. Thorn builds tools that analyze online activity, detect exploitation patterns, and assist investigators in locating at-risk children.

According to the organization’s reports, its technology has helped identify thousands of victims and supported cases that led to child recoveries and perpetrator identification. A 2017 update noted nearly 6,000 victims identified and more than 100 child recoveries linked to its tools, with later figures citing over 6,600 suspected perpetrators identified.

“What we do at our core is build technology to fight sexual exploitation of children,” Kutcher said in an interview with 48 Hours, stressing the importance of scalable solutions.

Kutcher also testified before Congress in 2017, urging stronger protections for vulnerable children and trafficking victims. He has acknowledged the emotional toll of the work but maintains it is a responsibility he takes seriously.

While his advocacy has drawn both praise and criticism, the broader focus remains on impact: how technology, policy, and enforcement can work together to better protect vulnerable children and support justice efforts worldwide.
