Conservative Backlash Grows After U.S., Israel Strike Iran

Military strikes carried out by Israel and the United States against Iran are exposing sharp divisions within President Donald Trump’s political base, with several prominent conservative voices openly condemning the operation.

The coordinated attacks, launched Feb. 28, targeted Iranian positions in Tehran and other strategic locations. Iranian state media reported that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in the strikes, though independent confirmation has remained limited.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump described the military campaign as a major success.

“It’s moving along rapidly. This has been this way for 47 years,” Trump said. “Nobody can believe the success we’re having — 48 leaders are gone in one shot.”

Iran Retaliates; U.S. Casualties Reported

Iran responded with missile and drone strikes targeting U.S. military installations in the Gulf region, including bases near Bahrain, Qatar and Dubai.

According to United States Central Command, three U.S. service members were killed and five others seriously wounded during the operation. Officials said combat activity remains ongoing.

Conservative Figures Break With Trump

The strikes have triggered an unusually public split among conservatives who have historically supported Trump’s foreign policy.

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson sharply criticized the president, calling the strikes “absolutely disgusting and evil” during remarks made in an interview with journalist Jonathan Karl. Carlson said he had personally urged Trump in a recent Oval Office meeting not to authorize military action.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene also denounced continued U.S. intervention abroad, arguing that Americans are weary of prolonged foreign conflicts.

“Thousands and thousands of Americans from my generation have been killed and injured in never-ending pointless foreign wars and we said no more,” Greene said in a statement, questioning the rationale for military involvement in Iran.

Sen. Rand Paul raised constitutional concerns, arguing that military action without congressional authorization undermines the separation of powers.

“The Constitution conferred the power to declare or initiate war to Congress for a reason, to make war less likely,” Paul said, adding that while he supports the safety of U.S. troops, he opposes what he characterized as another “Presidential war.”

Conservative commentator Matt Walsh of The Daily Wire warned against framing the conflict as a humanitarian mission.

“As Americans, the freedom of Iranians is not our responsibility,” Walsh said. “If a single American life is lost in the service of that goal, it will be a travesty.”

Trump Issues Warning

The latest military action follows earlier reported U.S. strikes last year on Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, conducted shortly after Israeli operations targeted Iran’s military infrastructure.

On Sunday, Trump signaled that operations would continue.

“An Iranian regime armed with long-range missiles and nuclear weapons would be a dire threat to every American,” he said, urging members of Iran’s security forces to surrender. “Lay down your arms and receive full immunity or face certain death.”

As the conflict escalates, the growing dissent within Trump’s conservative coalition underscores the political risks accompanying expanded U.S. military involvement in the region.
