Coach goes viral online for this one act during kids’ basketball game

Teachers often go above and beyond, and one recent act of kindness has captured hearts nationwide. Jonathan Oliver, a physical education teacher at WG Nunn Elementary in Valdosta, Georgia, was recorded helping kindergartener Kristen Paulk tie her hair into a ponytail during a basketball game. Taking a knee to get on her level, Oliver’s gentle attention highlighted the small but meaningful ways teachers care for their students beyond academics.
The moment was captured by fellow teacher Kandice Anderson and posted to YouTube under the title “When your job goes beyond teaching!” The video quickly went viral, later catching the attention of Good Morning America, where Oliver, a 34-year-old father of three, reflected on the gesture. “It was shocking to me that it got that much attention because we all do it,” he said, emphasizing that making students feel at home and supported is part of every teacher’s mission.
Kristen’s mother, Miyah Cleckley, praised Oliver’s thoughtfulness, noting how much he helps at home with his own children’s hair. This small act of kindness serves as a reminder that teachers are more than educators—they are mentors, role models, and everyday heroes who make lasting impressions on their students’ lives.
