Remember her? She was so pretty. See how she looks now…

Phoebe Cates became one of the most recognizable faces of 1980s cinema after breakout roles in Fast Times at Ridgemont High and the hit comedy-horror Gremlins. Over a 12-year career, she appeared in 16 films, including Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Drop Dead Fred, and Princess Caraboo. Her performances helped define a generation of teen and young adult films, making her a familiar figure to audiences across the United States.
Despite her success, Cates stepped away from Hollywood in the mid-1990s at the height of her fame. Her decision was largely personal: after marrying Oscar-winning actor Kevin Kline in 1989, she chose to focus on raising their family rather than continuing a demanding acting career. While many expected her to remain a constant presence on screen, she instead opted for a quieter life away from the spotlight, making only occasional appearances such as a cameo in The Anniversary Party.
In the years since, Cates has built a life outside the film industry. In 2005, she opened Blue Tree, a boutique on Madison Avenue known for its eclectic mix of fashion, gifts, and home items. Though she has largely remained out of the public eye, her legacy in film endures, and her decision to step back from Hollywood continues to be viewed as a rare example of a star choosing personal priorities over prolonged fame.
