Shooter’s disturbing letter to his family before Trump assassination attempt

Authorities say the case involving Cole Tomas Allen is now being examined as a highly premeditated attack that was set in motion well before he arrived at the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Investigators describe a timeline in which Allen allegedly severed personal ties in a final written message that officials characterize as a declaration of intent rather than a cry for help. Law enforcement sources say the note was discovered after his brother alerted authorities, but by that point Allen had already left for Washington and was reportedly armed.

Officials say he moved toward a restricted area inside the venue where senior political figures were gathered, including Donald Trump, Melania Trump, and other high-ranking officials. The United States Secret Service engaged the suspect, and during the confrontation one agent was shot before Allen was stopped and taken into custody.

Authorities have since been reviewing digital records, writings, and alleged affiliations, including references to the group The Wide Awakes, as they work to determine how the planning developed and whether there were missed warning signs.

The incident has intensified broader concerns about politically motivated violence and the challenge of identifying threats before they escalate. Security analysts note that even well-guarded events remain vulnerable to individuals acting alone, particularly when intent develops in isolation and is communicated too late for intervention.

As the investigation continues, officials are focusing not only on the actions that brought Allen to Washington, but also on the wider question now facing law enforcement: how to detect escalation before it reaches a point where intervention becomes a matter of seconds rather than prevention.
