When the Titanic sank in 1912, over 1,500 lives were lost, yet no human remains have ever been found at the wreck site, discovered in 1985. The ship rests over 12,000 feet deep in freezing, high-pressure waters where marine life quickly consumes soft tissue and bones dissolve due to a lack of calcium carbonate. Only 337 bodies were recovered shortly after the disaster, with more than 1,100 lost to the ocean. Experts, including filmmaker James Cameron, have only seen shoes and clothing where bodies once lay. Rather than mystery, this reflects how the deep sea naturally reclaims what’s lost.
