Hospice nurse reveals three signs people show 24 hours before dying

Hospice nurse Julie McFadden, known online as “Nurse Julie,” has shared the three signs she most often sees in the final 24 hours of life—emphasizing they’re not as frightening as people think. First is the “death rattle,” a gurgling sound caused by fluid in the throat when a patient can’t swallow, which isn’t painful. Second are changes in breathing, including slow, irregular, or gasping breaths, which are a natural reflex. Lastly, the “death stare,” where eyes and mouth may be open but unresponsive, often marks a peaceful stage. Julie says knowing these signs can help loved ones feel less afraid.
