What Is It, and Why Is It Called “Nature’s Most Terrifying Creatures”?

After a rainfall, a strange sight in the forest—something like an alien egg cracking open—may actually be a stinkhorn mushroom (Phallus impudicus). Famous for its unusual shape and overpowering odor, this fungus is one of nature’s most surprising creations.

It begins as a pale “witch’s egg” hidden in soil or leaves. Then, often overnight, it bursts open and rapidly grows a tall stalk—making it one of the fastest-growing fungi. Once mature, it releases a strong rotting smell that attracts flies and beetles, which spread its spores. Strange, smelly, and effective, the stinkhorn proves just how inventive nature can be.
