Raised in a Dangerous Cult, He Rose to Become One of Hollywood’s Most Respected and Wealthy Actors

Today, he stands among the most celebrated performers in modern cinema — an award-winning actor known for intense, transformative roles that leave lasting impressions on audiences worldwide.
Long before fame and acclaim, his childhood was shaped by poverty, instability, and life inside a controversial religious movement.

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he grew up traveling through South America after his parents joined The Children of God, a group that isolated members and forced children to solicit money from strangers. When his parents realized the group’s true nature, they fled back to the U.S. with nothing, changed their last name, and started over in Florida.

The family later moved to Los Angeles, where his mother worked in casting and he landed his first acting role at eight. For years he lived in the shadow of his brother River Phoenix—until tragedy struck in 1993, when River died of an overdose, a moment that profoundly shaped his life and career.
