He turned early heartbreak into Hollywood success and became one of television’s most admired leading men

Growing up surrounded by hardship and uncertainty, this future TV star transformed personal tragedy into a powerful acting career. Today, he’s recognized not only for his talent but also for being named among television’s “Ten Sexiest Men.”
A childhood marked by loss
On October 26, 1961, in Waterbury, a boy named Mark was born to two teenage parents. His mother, Diane, was just 15 years old, and his father, Richard, was 17. Their marriage ended before Mark turned two.
By the age of five, his life changed forever. In February 1967, his mother died from a gunshot wound to the head. Although he did not witness the shooting itself, he was present in the home moments before it happened. For decades, authorities classified her death as accidental — a conclusion that would later be revisited.
