Husband who lost wife and daughter in Maldives scuba diving tragedy breaks silence with powerful claim

The deaths of renowned marine biologist Monica Montefalcone and her daughter Giorgia during a deep-water diving expedition have left a grieving husband searching for answers as investigators continue examining what went wrong beneath the surface.

Carlo Sommaca, Monica’s husband and Giorgia’s father, says he is haunted by the chain of decisions that led his family onto the ill-fated dive boat. Describing Monica as an exceptionally cautious and experienced professional, Carlo rejected any suggestion that she approached the ocean recklessly. “She respected the sea completely,” he said, emphasizing her years of scientific expertise and meticulous preparation before every expedition.

The tragedy, which claimed the lives of five experienced divers at a depth of nearly 50 meters, has raised serious questions among diving experts and investigators. Early discussions have focused on possible causes including oxygen toxicity, equipment failure, compromised air tanks, and rapidly changing underwater conditions. Authorities are also reviewing weather patterns and safety protocols surrounding the dive operation.

For Carlo, however, the technical explanations cannot fully address the emotional devastation left behind. As investigations continue, he says his grief has evolved into a demand for accountability and clarity over how such a catastrophic loss could occur despite the group’s experience and trust in the site and supervision.

Beyond the forensic analysis lies a deeply personal tragedy: a husband left in an empty home with memories, unanswered questions, and a loss no inquiry can reverse. What was once considered a place of beauty and exploration has, for one family, become forever associated with heartbreak and mourning.
