Dog Set on Fire and Strangled in Brutal Attack Shows Remarkable Recovery, Rescuers Say

A dog named Buddy is being described as a symbol of resilience after surviving a severe and violent attack that left him critically injured, according to animal rescuers and veterinary staff.

Buddy was taken in by the Tunica Humane Society after being found with extensive burn injuries and an extension cord reportedly wrapped around his neck. He was later treated at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where specialists began long-term emergency care and reconstructive treatment.

Veterinarians involved in his care described his condition in the early stages as critical, requiring intensive wound management, bandaging, and ongoing monitoring. Despite the severity of his injuries, they reported gradual but steady signs of recovery over time, including successful skin graft procedures.

Animal welfare officials said the case was particularly devastating due to the nature of the attack and the fact that a child under the age of 12 reportedly admitted involvement, meaning no criminal prosecution was possible under current law.

Over the months following his treatment, rescuers reported continued improvement in Buddy’s condition. As bandages were reduced and healing progressed, they said his behavior began to change noticeably, becoming more active and engaged.

In a major milestone, caregivers later confirmed that Buddy’s vision had returned after a long period in which his eyes had been covered during recovery. They described the moment as a significant turning point in his rehabilitation.

Rescue staff now say Buddy has regained much of his playful personality and continues to improve, highlighting his recovery as an example of long-term veterinary care and rehabilitation success in severe abuse cases.
