Julia Roberts has long been known for her radiant smile, magnetic presence, and effortless grace. However, her transformation for August: Osage County surprised many viewers because she set aside glamour and embraced a far more raw and emotional role.
While filming in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, the 44-year-old actress left behind the polished Hollywood image that had defined much of her career. Instead, she immersed herself completely in a demanding performance that focused on realism and emotional intensity.
In the film, adapted from Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize–winning play, Roberts plays Barbara Weston, the eldest daughter in a deeply dysfunctional Oklahoma family. The story explores themes of grief, betrayal, addiction, and long-standing family conflicts — a dramatic shift from the romantic comedies that once made Roberts a global star.
To portray Barbara authentically, Roberts adopted a much simpler appearance. She wore loose jeans, neutral layers, and minimal styling, with natural brunette hair replacing the glamorous look audiences often associate with her. The transformation reflected a character struggling under the pressure of family turmoil.
One of the film’s most emotional moments takes place at a lakeside dock, where Barbara must identify a body with local authorities. Acting alongside Ewan McGregor, who plays her estranged husband Bill Fordham, Roberts delivers a restrained yet powerful performance. Her quiet breakdown in the scene, marked by subtle emotion and vulnerability, left a strong impression on the crew.
Despite the heavy themes of the story, the atmosphere on set was often light between takes. Roberts was frequently seen laughing with her co-stars, especially Julianne Nicholson, who plays her sister Ivy. Nicholson’s understated wardrobe and simple style reflected the film’s grounded realism, while their off-screen friendship brought warmth to the challenging production.
