Judge Defends Verdict and Calls Convicted Teen “Nice Young Man” After 35-Year Sentence in Frisco Murder Case

After a Texas jury convicted 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony of murder in the killing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, the presiding judge has publicly defended the outcome while making an unexpected personal remark about the defendant.

Anthony was sentenced to 35 years in prison following the June 2026 verdict, which stemmed from a fatal confrontation at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025. Prosecutors said the incident escalated when Anthony pulled a knife from his backpack and fatally stabbed Metcalf during an altercation. The jury rejected the defense’s claim of self-defense and also dismissed arguments that the act occurred under “sudden passion,” which could have reduced the charge.

Following the trial, Judge John Roach told reporters he fully supports the jury’s decision, emphasizing that the verdict was based on evidence presented in court and reached after proper legal procedure. He said the case was handled fairly and that his role was to ensure both sides received a just trial under the law.

In comments that drew attention, the judge also described Anthony as a “nice young man,” while reflecting on the case and the consequences of the verdict. His remarks have sparked discussion, coming as the community continues to process the outcome of a case that deeply affected the families involved and drew widespread public attention.
